SAT Reading & Writing 01

[ 80 Digital SAT–style passages · 5 per round · 1 question each ]

Short passages from science, history, social studies, the arts, and literature, with every question type on the Digital SAT Reading and Writing section. Every choice is explained.

📝 How to use this quiz

Each round gives you 5 short passages. Read each one and answer one four-choice question, just like the Digital SAT, where every Reading and Writing question comes with its own short text.

After you answer, you will see why the correct answer works and why each of the other three choices does not, plus key vocabulary, a strategy tip, and a short guide to that question type. Tap 🔊 to hear the passage read aloud.

Choose how passages are picked: new passages first (ones you have not tried yet), random, or review the passages you missed. You can also practice one question type at a time, such as Transitions or Boundaries.

Audio plays only when you tap a speaker button (you can choose an American or British voice).

About SAT Reading & Writing 01

The Reading and Writing section of the Digital SAT is made of many short passages, usually 25 to 150 words long, and each passage has exactly one question. This quiz works the same way. It has 80 original passages on topics such as octopus arms, the Rosetta Stone, kintsugi, crows that recognize faces, the Silk Road, and poems by Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost, and they cover all eleven question types in the four content domains of the test.

  • Craft and Structure: Words in Context, Text Structure and Purpose, and Cross-Text Connections.
  • Information and Ideas: Central Ideas and Details, Command of Evidence (textual and quantitative, with tables), and Inferences.
  • Standard English Conventions: Boundaries (punctuation between and within sentences) and Form, Structure, and Sense (agreement, verb forms, pronouns, possessives, and modifiers).
  • Expression of Ideas: Transitions and Rhetorical Synthesis (using a student's notes to accomplish a goal).

Each round has 5 passages, so you can practice in a few minutes a day. After every question you can read why each choice is right or wrong, so even a wrong answer teaches you something. Practice your weakest question type with the question-type menu, and check your progress in "Your results by question type."
